It’s nearly that time of year again. Kids from across the region will break up for the half term holidays from February 20th to 25th. With that in mind, it’s important to have some plan in place, for the sake of your sanity as much as theirs. Here’s our guide to the best things to do around the region.
Museums
Us lot in the North East are spoiled for choice when it comes to museums. There’s something for everyone, no matter what your interests are. Interested in science? The Centre for Life, Discovery Museum and the Hancock Museum are all great choices. Like to be transported to another era? Beamish or Segedunum are immersive and fun ways to explore the past. Fan of art? Try the Baltic or Laing Art Gallery which showcase both classic and contemporary art.

Out and about
If your brood are fans of nature then get those wellies on and head outdoors. There are several places you could go out to see the region’s wildlife. If you’re a family of animal lovers, Jesmond Dene and Ouseburn Farm are the ideal place to meet some cute critters; from alpacas to colourful birds and much more!

Retail therapy
Those of you who love to shop can now do so guilt free! According to a study by Oxford University, shopping trips are just as beneficial for the child’s development as painting or drawing activities. So shop away at Intu Eldon Square or Metrocentre. Once you’re done why not go for a coffee in one of the region’s many quirky cafés?

Historic
If history is your thing then check out the region’s countless historic monuments. The North East has a fascinating past so if you’re looking to stimulate their minds intellectually, sightseeing is the perfect opportunity to do so. Some of the region’s highlights include Stephenson Railway Museum, which chronicles the invention of the steam train, or any of the castles in the area which are the remnants of challenging conquests and bloody battles.

By the sea
Weather permitting, a nice walk across one of the North East’s many beaches is a great way to spend the holidays and also ensures the little ones are keeping active. Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth host lovely views of the sea and are perfect if you want to take the dog along with you. Some highlights of the area include the Blue Reef Aquarium, which is home to over home to over 40 living displays, and St. Mary’s Lighthouse, a listed building with spectacular views.

Whatever you decide to do, you won’t be disappointed by the range of activities on offer in and around the North East. Even better news, Metro has partnered up with several attractions to help you make some serious savings. For a full list of offers, click here.
