Newcastle NE1 Restaurant Week may have come and gone with a bang but out of the oven ashes, a new event is rising on the Newcastle restaurant scene. Yes, Vegan Restaurant Week has made its debut! The week has already seen a phenomenal amount of success, with over 40 restaurants signed up, meaning that from 23rd to the 29th January you won’t be far from good food.
Whether you’re a dedicated vegan, taking part in Veganuary or you just want to try some delicious meat-free alternatives, Newcastle Vegan Week leaves you discerning diners spoiled for choice. The only question remaining is where to go?
To help you through this culinary conundrum, we’ve created a list of our top picks in Newcastle:
The Staith’s Café
Located on the Dunston Staiths, The Staith’s Café is the hidden gem of Gateshead and has become a destination point for comfort, socialising and relaxation. The fantastic food, coupled with impressive views of the Tyne, provide a memorable dining experience. Whilst there, look out for the Lebanese Vegan Kebob, which includes spiced soya chunks served with mixed salad, pickles, hummus and a choice of sauce.

Harissa Kitchen
Right in the heart of Sandyford, Harissa Kitchen serves fresh, tasty and colourful food from all corners of the Mediterranean. All dishes are seasonal therefore guaranteed to be of the highest quality. With profits invested back into the Food Nation social enterprise, you can be assured that your meal will not only be doing you good, but also the community. Catching our eye is the Hooba Sausage with Spiced Lentils and a Coriander Dressing.

The Factory Kitchen
If you like a bit of culture with your cuisine, then head to The Factory Kitchen. Situated in The Biscuit Factory, it serves fresh, bold flavours and is influenced by Europe’s quintessential café culture. What’s more, the café boasts a collection of original artwork to suit all tastes. We highly recommend the Sourdough, sautéed mushrooms, tomato and a rocket and pumpkin seed pesto if you want a filling meal that’s packed full of flavour.

Ernest
Those of you who like your meal with a hint of sharpness need to check out Ernest. This café/bar/everything-in-between epitomises all that is cool about Ouseburn. It provides honest food, drink, music and art, and promises a good night when it turns into a dance venue on selected evenings. Ernest is offering 2 courses for £10 or 3 for £15 with the Veggie Chilli Burger on bloomer and Sweet Pepper Relish as one of its highlights.

Urban Bakery
Fan of artisanal baking? Then go to Urban Bakery! This family-run business should be considered one of Gateshead’s finest dining spots, offering gorgeous food with local produce high on the menu. The bakery endeavours to create healthy food without the use of chemicals, enhancers or artificial ingredients of any sort. If, like us, you’ve got a sweet tooth then try their famous Urban Legend Flapjacks.

There’s so much on offer this week with restaurants creating bespoke menus that will satisfy anyone who is a fan of food. So what are you waiting for? Go and see for yourself.
